Ground game gives El Toro extra push to pull away from Aliso Niguel

ALISO VIEJO – No. 14 El Toro showed off its offensive versatility in a 41-24 victory over No. 24 Aliso Niguel on Friday in a Sea View League game.

The Chargers are known mostly for their prolific passing offense, but demonstrated the ability to run the ball and control the clock. Steven Castaneda and Julian Bruce rushed for 95 and 90 yards, respectively, on a combined 26 carries.

“Any time you can run the football it’s a benefit to you,” El Toro coach Mike Mayoral said.

Cooper Jones threw the ball well as well. The senior quarterback completed 15 of 20 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns.

“That’s who Cooper is. He’s an outstanding young man,” Mayoral said. “He’s got great character and he plays like a 6-foot-8 guy. He’s really special.”

The turning point in the game was late in the third quarter. After an interception by Jake Landry (his second pick of the game, the first was a pick 6), Jones threw a 90-yard touchdown pass to Shane Mclaughlin to extend the El Toro lead to 10.

“The ball was a little bit underthrown but Shane Mclaughlin made a great play and scored for me. It was nice,” Jones said.

Jones threw two other touchdown passes, both to Austin Derrico (Austin also had an interception). The trio of Mclaughlin, Derrico and Noah Aguilar caught 13 passes for 227 yards.

“My job is to get the ball in their hands. I personally believe I have the best playmakers in the county,” Jones said. “It’s my job to get it in their hands and they do the rest.”

Aliso Niguel (4-3, 0-1) moved the ball well but had three turnovers. Receiver Tyler Jones caught 12 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown.

“He’s a good football player so he was definitely on our mind,” Mayoral said. “We added a little something this week to try to slow him down. Overall we kept him in check which was our gameplan.”

Aliso quarterback Kyle Robertson threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown.

El Toro (4-3, 1-0) plays No. 11 Capistrano Valley next week in what will potentially decide the Sea View League championship.

“I’m sure in both of our minds it’s a league championship game,” Jones said. “We have to execute a lot better than we did tonight. I think we will come out with a ‘W’ if we play a hard game.”

September 29, 2017

MISSION VIEJO – While Mission Viejo honored all branches of the military with veterans in attendance for patriotic displays on its Armed Forces Night, you’d be forgiven if you thought the Diablos’ offense favored the Air Force.

Quarterback Joey Yellen threw for 363 yards and four touchdowns in the first half – 147 yards and three touchdowns to Olaijah Griffin on three receptions – as No. 2 Mission Viejo rolled in its nonleague finale over No. 14 El Toro, 42-17, Friday at Mission Viejo High.

“It’s an absolute honor, there’s no other way to put it,” Yellen said of his team wearing a veteran’s name on the back of their jerseys. “It’s an unbelievable tradition. My veteran was actually a fallen one, unbelievably accomplished. To be able to bring him some honor to his parents and all that, it was a real treat.”

Mission Viejo opens South Coast League play next Friday, Oct. 6, against Tesoro. El Toro starts Sea View League play next Friday,Oct. 6, at Aliso Niguel.

Chris Mitchell carried the ball 12 times for 99 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Mission Viejo (6-0) stifled El Toro (3-3) early and held the Chargers to 102 yards of offense in the first half with just six rushing yards.

El Toro quarterback Cooper Jones completed six of 26 first-half passes for 96 yards. He finished 14 of 38 for 218 yards and two second-half touchdowns.

The Diablos got right to work as Yellen hit Griffin on a 40-yard TD pass on their first drive.

“We had a good showing, offense and defense,” Yellen said. “Some things really clicked in the pass game. Some things we still have to fix up, but an improvement, for sure.”

Ryan Kennedy pulled in an interception two plays later, and Yellen turned it around on another TD pass to Griffin of 20 yards.

Noah Aguilar pulled in an interception for El Toro, but the Chargers couldn’t mount anything with it.

After a turnover on downs, Mission Viejo put together an 83-yard drive capped on a 19-yard run by Mitchell.

As the first quarter expired, Yellen found Osborne who fought off some tackles en route to a 33-yard touchdown and a four-score lead, 28-0.

“Not going to lie, our first five games we were kind of slow in the passing game,” Osborne said. “We had a good week of practice. We got it rolling.”

El Toro scored on their first two second-half drives with a 26-yard TD pass from Jones to Aquilar and a 22-yard field goal by Matt Freem.

Mission Viejo brought its starters back in and Shaun Javier-Rhodes scored on an 11-yard run.

Jones threw his second TD pass to Sam Whipple for six yards in the fourth quarter.
