COSTA MESA – Corona del Mar’s offense has Chase Garbers’ great arm, an outstanding group of receivers and a heck of an offensive line.

Those three components came together Friday for Corona del Mar in a 42-13 win over El Toro in a nonleague game at Estancia High.

Garbers threw for 344 yards and four touchdowns. Garbers, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior who committed to Cal, also ran for two touchdowns. Junior receiver Tae Le had nine receptions for 234 yards and three touchdowns, including a short sideline pass he turned into an 88-yard scoring sprint.

Corona del Mar, ranked No. 14 in Orange County and No. 6 in CIF-Southern Section Division 4, is 2-1. The Sea Kings lost their season opener at Palos Verdes, 42-20, then got a 31-13 win last week at Los Gatos.

El Toro is 0-3. The Chargers, No. 20 in the Orange County top 25, lost earlier to La Habra and at Eastlake of Chula Vista.

Garbers and Sea Kings coach Dan O’Shea credited the offensive line of Colston Chacon, Arwin Rahmatpanah, Sean Owens, Bryan Samudo and Denham King for helping all of that scoring happen.

“Tae and Chase look great,” O’Shea said. “But it all starts up front.”

Corona del Mar scored 14 points in the first, second and third quarters. The Sea Kings had a 28-0 lead in the second quarter and took a 42-6 lead into the fourth.

They scored their first touchdown on their second possession. Garbers connected with Le on a 68-yard touchdown pass. Le caught the ball near midfield, skipped over the fallen defensive back who vied with him for the ball then ran the rest of the way for the six points.

The Sea Kings recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff at El Toro’s 22-yard line and quickly converted. Garbers, rolling right, tossed 12 yards to Le who made a leaping catch and just managed to get a foot in the end zone. That made it 14-0.

Corona del Mar pushed the lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter when Garbers scored on a 5-yard run. Later in the quarter, Garbers dropped back before taking off on a 15-yard touchdown run on which he did a tuck-and-roll, high-jump move to get into the end zone for a 28-0 lead.

El Toro scored with 37 seconds left in the second quarter on quarterback Cooper Jones’ 18-yard pass to Noah Aguilar.

The Sea Kings’ two third-quarter TDs were on an 11-yard pass from Garbers to Reese Perez and Le’s 88-yard score.

El Toro got a late touchdown on a 70-yard run by Marcus Blevins.

Corona del Mar’s next game is against Newport Harbor at Orange Coast College on Friday – the Battle of the Bay. Newport Harbor has a 38-16 lead in the series, although Corona del Mar won the game last year, 24-3, and has defeated Newport Harbor three years in a row.

El Toro plays at home against Tesoro next Friday.

El Toro fell 41-21 to the Eastlake Titans in Chula Vista. El Toro had stretches in the game where everything was clicking, but those stretches were short circuited one way or another. In spite of this, the Chargers on offense moved the ball effectively for large portions of the game, but were limited to 3 touchdown passes. El Toro, trailing 21-7 at the half, pulled to within a touchdown twice, and almost yet again a third time before being turned away on the Eastlake 2 yard line. A score at that point would have cut the Titan lead to 6 with plenty of time remaining in the 4th quarter. The Titans tacked on late scores, but the game was much closer than the final score indicated.

Defensively the Chargers made tackles for losses and would place Eastlake’s offense in difficult positions, but the Titans were able to find a way to make a big play when they needed it. AJ Aguilar led the team with 11 tackles, 3 for losses and was flying to the football all game. Defensive lineman Andrew Aguilar was in the backfield often, and forced a fumble that was recovered by Noah Aguilar on the first Eastlake drive of the second half. Andrew finished unofficially with 5 tackles. Chris Sawaya had 5 1/2 tackles himself and was active making plays. DE’s Robert Brandenburg and Jeremiah Allen finished with 8 tackles and Brandenburg forced a fumble that Eastlake was fortunate to fall on. Artie Varela had multiple tackles including 1 for a loss and a clutch break-up of a Titan pass on 3rd down. Multiple tackles were also turned in by Patrick Kotnik and Jacob Williams, 1 for a loss of yardage by Kotnik.

The Offensive Line did an outstanding job once again providing time to throw and allowing the offense to accumulate 385 yards in the air. Senior Center Kevin Frum (who also played linebacker), Tackles Conrad Frick and Kyle Whitesides, along with Guards Dominick Vasquez and Angel Rodriguez were rock solid up front in pass protection against a big Eastlake defensive line. Football is a big man’s game and these Chargers in the trenches played well as a unit. Wide Receiver Austin Derrico finished with 8 catches on the night, including 3 TD’s for 152 receiving yards and he also had another bundle of return yards on special teams. Noah Aguilar had a huge game with 10 receptions for 153 yards, and had a diving interception on defense as he undercut a receiver for the pick (Noah also added a fumble recovery on defense for good measure). Ricky Silva caught the ball 7 times and carried it 11 times for 60 plus yards including a nice burst up the sidelines after a catch for a 23 yard pick up. Marcus Blevins averaged over 5 yards a carry and had big first down scamper to keep a drive alive in the second half. Shane McLaughlin returned an Eastlake kick-off 75 yards to the Titan 10 and added 4 catches. Chris Sawaya also had a nice reception in traffic. QB Cooper Jones finished 31 of 53 for 385 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT and spread the football around to the Charger receivers. In the kicking game, Matthew Freem hit his PAT’s and handled all of the kick-off and punt game duties this week.

Next Friday, September 9th, the Chargers look to put it all together against Corona Del Mar. They will be on the road. Check the schedule on www.etfootball.com for details

La Habra finishes strong to beat El Toro

The Highlanders rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat visiting El Toro, 42-34, in a back-and-fourth season-opening game for both teams.

El Toro led, 26-24, early in the fourth but the Highlanders – known for their dramatic Hail Mary passes last season en route to the CIF-SS Southwest title – scored three consecutive touchdowns in a span of about 21/2 minutes to hold off El Toro.

In a game with seven lead changes, La Habra scored the go-ahead points on a 49-yard yard touchdown catch by Pervis Henderson with 8:28 left in the fourth.

Henderson cut in front of his defender to catch a high-arching, deep pass from quarterback Zach Fogel to give the Highlanders a 30-26 lead.

Moments later, La Habra linebacker Marcus Carrasco returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown and 36-26 advantage.

La Habra’s Adalberto Gutierrez recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff – the Highlanders’ second recovery on a kickoff – and running Eli Anderson capitalized with a 6-yard TD run with 5:54 left as La Habra led, 42-26.

El Toro quarterback Cooper Jones tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Austin Derrico with 4:19 left, but La Habra forced a late fumble at the Chargers’ 10 to seal the victory.

La Habra’s hard-hitting defense, led by safety Madison Wheeler, forced five turnovers, including an interception by the senior. The Highlanders, however, were twice called for striking the head on big hits, had one player ejected and racked up the penalty yards.

Anderson rushed for 124 yards and four TDs while Henderson also added an 80-yard TD catch in the second half.

Jones, a junior, passed for 324 yards and three TDs, working well with Derrico, Noah Aguilar and Shane McLaughlin.

El Toro led at halftime, 16-12, behind three field goals by Matt Freem and an efficient Jones.

Jones led the Chargers to scores on four of their five possessions. Freem kicked field goals of 25, 23 and 33 yards.

El Toro took a 13-12 lead early in the second quarter on Jones’ 14-yard touchdown pass on a short slant to Derrico and an extra-point by Freem.

Jones completed 15 of 24 passes for 195 yards in the first half
